Why Ghana works from Johannesburg

Johannesburg to Accra is one of the more rewarding pan-African trips you can make. Both cities sit on the same continent, yet they feel worlds apart. Travellers from Gauteng tell us they come to Ghana for what South Africa cannot offer: the Atlantic slave forts of the Central Region, the living Ashanti court in Kumasi, and a food culture built on jollof, kelewele and grilled tilapia rather than the braai.

There is a steady Ghanaian community across Johannesburg and Pretoria, and plenty of South African business travellers who fly up for meetings and tack on a few days. Whichever camp you fall into, the ground logistics are the part people underestimate.

As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, we handle the awkward bits: the airport pickup, the Accra traffic, the long drive down the coast road. Your holiday starts the moment you clear immigration, not after an argument with a taxi rank.

Flights from Johannesburg to Accra

The route runs either nonstop or with a single stop, depending on the day and the season. Where a direct service operates, the flight is roughly six hours, which makes even a long weekend feasible. One-stop options usually route through another African hub or the Gulf; they add a few hours but often cost less.

We do not publish flight numbers or fares here, because airlines retime routes and move prices constantly. Check current availability with the carriers or your agent, then send us your flight and terminal. Tell us when you land and we will be at Kotoka to meet you.

Two things to sort before you fly: your entry permit and your timing. Read our guide to Ghana's visa and ETA rules, and check the best time to visit so you are not landing in the heaviest rains of May and June.

What most Johannesburg visitors see

A first Ghana trip almost always runs the coastal loop. From Accra you drive west to Cape Coast and Elmina, where the two castles tell the hard history of the transatlantic trade with a directness that stays with you. Nearby, Kakum National Park has a canopy walkway strung between old-growth trees, best done early before the day-trippers arrive.

Back in Accra, Jamestown, the Makola market and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum fill a good day. With a week you can add Kumasi for the Manhyia Palace and the Kejetia market, or push north to Mole for elephants on foot. Our 7-day Ghana itinerary maps a sensible version, and the castles guide covers the coast in depth.

How we run it on the ground

Every trip we operate is private. That means an air-conditioned car or a Hiace minibus for larger groups, a driver-guide who knows the roads, and an itinerary built around your dates rather than a fixed departure. We are based in Kasoa, on the Accra-Cape Coast road, so the coastal sites are effectively on our doorstep.

A private tour costs more than winging it with shared minibuses and taxis. What you get back is time and calm: no haggling for every leg, no missed connections, and a driver who can read the traffic on the Kasoa-Winneba stretch. For getting around independently, our transport guide is honest about the trade-offs.

What a trip actually costs

We will never quote a headline price on a page like this, because an honest number depends on your trip. Four people sharing a minibus for a coastal weekend and a couple wanting a week with northern add-ons are two different budgets. The main drivers are group size, season, the standard of hotel you want, and how much distance you cover.

Fuel, park fees, the driver-guide's time and your accommodation all feed in, and Ghana has real high and low seasons that move hotel rates, particularly around Christmas and the Year of Return period in December. For a wider view, read our Ghana trip cost breakdown. When you are ready, send your dates and group size and we will build a clear, itemised quote with no surprises bolted on later.

Book your flights when you are happy with the routing, then let us take care of Ghana. We meet Johannesburg travellers at Kotoka most weeks, and we would be glad to plan yours: a clean vehicle, a driver-guide who knows the country, and a route that suits your time.

Ready when you are. Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp for a tailored quote, arrange a Kotoka pickup, or browse our tours to get started.

No pressure and no hard sell. Tell us what you have in mind and we will tell you honestly what works.

Questions people ask

How do I book a tour from Johannesburg?

Send us your travel dates and group size by WhatsApp or through our tours page. We reply with a tailored itinerary and an itemised quote, and once you are happy we confirm the details and your Kotoka pickup.

What is included in a private tour?

Typically an air-conditioned vehicle, a driver-guide, fuel and park entry for planned stops, and airport pickup. Accommodation and meals can be included or left to you; we set it out clearly in the quote so nothing is ambiguous.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Yes. Every trip we run is private and built around your dates and interests, whether that is a two-day coastal loop or a full week reaching Kumasi and the north.

Do you handle small groups and solo travellers?

We do. A saloon car suits one or two people; families and friend groups usually take a Hiace minibus. Group size is one of the main things that shapes your quote.

Is a deposit needed?

We usually confirm a booking with a deposit and settle the balance nearer your travel date. The exact terms are stated in your quote before you commit to anything.

Is it safe and reliable?

Ghana is one of the calmer countries in the region to travel, and we run these routes weekly with our own vehicles and drivers. For a fuller picture, read our Ghana safety guide and always check current official travel advice before you fly.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
