The short answer

  • Dakar to Accra is roughly two to three hours by air when a nonstop runs, or one-stop within the region.
  • Ghana is English-speaking, an easy change of gear from Francophone Senegal.
  • Heritage travellers often pair Goree Island with Ghana's Cape Coast and Elmina castles.
  • The core route covers Accra, the coastal castles, Kakum rainforest and Kumasi.
  • We are a Kasoa-based team and meet clients straight off the plane at Kotoka.
  • Check current flights yourself, then send us dates and group size for a tailored quote.

From Dakar to Accra

Dakar sits at the far western tip of the continent, Accra a good way down the coast, and the two are among the best-connected cities in West Africa. When a nonstop is running you are looking at roughly two to three hours in the air; otherwise it is a simple one-stop through a regional hub. Either way it is a short journey by African standards, and it keeps you inside familiar West African rhythms.

The obvious change is language. Senegal runs in French and Wolof, while Ghana operates in English, so the practical business of travelling — hotels, drivers, directions — gets easier the moment you land. As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, we pick up where your flight leaves off and handle the ground from Kotoka onwards.

A heritage thread that runs to Ghana

If you have stood on Goree Island and read the story of the Door of No Return, Ghana continues that thread with unusual power. The forts at Cape Coast and Elmina are larger and older, and walking their dungeons with a guide is one of the most moving things a visitor can do in the region.

Beyond the castles, Ghana opens out. There is the Kakum canopy walk through rainforest, the Ashanti crafts and palaces around Kumasi, Accra's food and music, and a string of quiet Atlantic beaches. For the diaspora in particular, Ghana has made a point of welcoming people tracing their roots — our reasons to visit Ghana page sets out why so many make the journey.

Then there is the food, which is reason enough on its own. Waakye for breakfast, jollof you will find yourself defending against all comers, red-red with fried plantain, and fresh tilapia with banku along the shore. In Accra we tend to build in Jamestown, the old fishing quarter beneath the lighthouse, and Makola market, so you see the working city rather than only the sights.

Getting around once you land

Kotoka International Airport is compact and central, so you are into Accra within half an hour outside rush hour. From there the main sights sit on decent surfaced roads, though Accra traffic is heavy and every journey runs longer than the distance suggests. We plan drive times realistically rather than optimistically.

Most Dakar visitors keep a private vehicle for the whole trip, which removes the guesswork of local transport. If you would like the wider picture before you arrive, our guide to getting around Ghana lays out the options honestly.

Arrive relaxed. Have a friendly driver waiting when you clear the terminal. Book airport pickup and start the trip without the arrivals-hall hassle.

How our private tours work

What we run for Dakar travellers is almost always private. That means an air-conditioned car for a couple, or a minibus for a family or group, with a driver-guide who knows the roads and the sites and can read the day sensibly — when to leave early, where to break for lunch, when to skip a detour. There is no fixed coach clock to beat.

A typical week runs the coast and castles, adds Kakum, then heads up to Kumasi and back. If you would rather start from a set plan, our 7-day Ghana itinerary is a template we happily adjust to your pace and interests.

Costs, visas and practical notes

We do not quote one flat price because the honest figure depends on your trip. Group size spreads the cost of the vehicle and guide; season, hotel standard and how far north you travel all move the total, as does whether you keep the car private. Tell us what you have in mind and we will give you a straight quote rather than a headline number. Our cost breakdown shows what feeds into it.

On entry, requirements differ by nationality. ECOWAS passport holders generally have an easier time, but others may need a visa or travel authorisation, and these rules change, so confirm the current position for your passport before you fly — our visa and ETA guide is a starting point. A yellow fever certificate is normally required in the region. Ghana is stable and friendly; see our safety guide for the sensible basics. Mobile money is used everywhere and cards work in the bigger hotels, but keep some cedis on hand for smaller places and change money at a bank or a proper bureau rather than on the street.

Plan your Ghana trip from Dakar

The flight is the short part. Once you are down, we take care of the driving, the hotels and the route, so a trip that pairs Senegal with Ghana feels like one smooth journey rather than two separate efforts.

Get a tailored quote. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size and a real person in Kasoa will reply with a plan. Begin on our Plan my trip page.

Confirm your flights first, then let us handle Ghana from the runway onwards. We would be glad to plan it with you.

Questions people ask

How long is the flight from Dakar to Accra?

When a nonstop service is running, it is roughly two to three hours; otherwise you connect one-stop through a regional hub, which adds time. Schedules and routes change between airlines and seasons, so check current flights before you commit to dates. We meet you at Kotoka International Airport whichever way you arrive.

How do I book a tour with you?

Send your travel dates and group size, ideally on WhatsApp, and tell us what you want to see. We reply with a suggested route and an honest quote. When you are happy, we confirm the arrangements and set up your driver-guide and vehicle. Asking for a quote puts you under no obligation.

What is included in a private tour?

A private tour usually includes an air-conditioned vehicle, a driver-guide, fuel and the daily logistics of moving between sites. Hotels, entrance fees and meals can be built in or left to you. We spell out exactly what your quote covers before you commit, so there are no hidden extras.

Can I combine Ghana with a heritage focus?

Yes, and many travellers coming from Dakar do exactly that. We can build the trip around the Cape Coast and Elmina castles and the wider history, at whatever pace suits you. Tell us your interests and how many days you have, and we shape the route around them.

Do I need a visa for Ghana?

It depends on your nationality. ECOWAS citizens generally enter more easily, while others may need a visa or travel authorisation. These rules change, so always confirm the current requirement for your passport with an official source before travelling. Our visa guide is a good place to begin.

Is Ghana safe and reliable for visitors?

Ghana is regarded as one of the more settled and welcoming countries in West Africa, and English is spoken throughout, which makes travel simple. We run these tours every week with our own drivers and vehicles. Take normal sensible precautions, and see our Ghana safety guide for more.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
