Ghana tours from Freetown

Freetown and Accra are a short flight apart, and both run in English, so Ghana is about as easy a trip as you can make from Sierra Leone. Here is how to plan it.

The short answer

  • Freetown to Accra is roughly one and a half to two hours by air where a nonstop runs, or one-stop otherwise.
  • Both countries operate in English, so there is no language change to manage.
  • Ghana's tourism runs on well-worn routes: castles, rainforest, Ashanti crafts and beaches.
  • The core loop covers Accra, Cape Coast and Elmina, Kakum and Kumasi.
  • We are a Kasoa-based team and meet clients at Kotoka on arrival.
  • Confirm current flights yourself, then send us dates and group size for a tailored quote.

From Freetown to Accra

Freetown and Accra share a coastline, a colonial-era history and a working language, which makes Ghana one of the most comfortable trips you can plan from Sierra Leone. Flying time is short — roughly one and a half to two hours where a nonstop is running, a little longer if you connect one-stop through a regional hub. Note that Freetown's Lungi airport sits across the water from the city, so build in the ferry or water taxi transfer when you plan your departure.

Because both countries operate in English, there is none of the language reset that travellers hit heading into Francophone neighbours. You land, you understand the signs, and you get on with your trip. As a Kasoa-based team who run these regional trips every week, we take over at Kotoka and handle everything on the Ghana side.

What Ghana lays on

Ghana's tourism runs on well-established routes, which is part of the appeal after the effort of getting around at home. The Atlantic slave forts at Cape Coast and Elmina are the anchor of most trips, sobering and beautifully preserved, and worth doing with a guide who can give them context.

From there the country opens up. The Kakum canopy walk takes you across the rainforest at treetop height; Kumasi is the Ashanti capital with its kente weaving and palace; and Accra brings food, markets and nightlife. Add a couple of beach days and you have a full week that never feels rushed. Our reasons to visit Ghana page rounds out the picture.

The eating is a trip in itself. Waakye for breakfast, red-red with fried plantain, jollof you will end up having opinions about, and grilled tilapia with banku by the sea. In Accra we usually fold in Jamestown, the old fishing quarter under the lighthouse, and Makola market, so you get the working city and not just the monuments.

Getting around once you arrive

Kotoka is central and easy, so you are into Accra quickly. The roads between the headline sights are surfaced and the driving is straightforward, with the honest caveat that Accra traffic is heavy and journeys always take longer than the map promises. We plan around that rather than pretend it away.

Most Freetown visitors keep a private vehicle for the whole trip, which is far simpler than piecing together local transport in an unfamiliar country. If you want the full rundown before you fly, our guide to getting around Ghana covers the options plainly. The coastal road west to Cape Coast is the smoothest stretch you will drive; the run north to Kumasi is longer and worth an early start.

Land smoothly. Have a driver waiting the moment you clear Kotoka. Book airport pickup and skip the arrivals crush.

How our private tours work

What we run for Freetown travellers is nearly always private. You get an air-conditioned car for a couple, or a minibus for a family or group, plus a driver-guide who knows the roads, the sites and where to stop for a good plate of jollof. Nothing runs on a fixed coach timetable, so the days bend to suit you.

A common shape is a few days on the coast and castles, Kakum in the middle, then a run up to Kumasi. If you prefer to start from a plan, our 7-day Ghana itinerary is a solid template we can trim or extend to match your dates.

Costs, visas and practical notes

We do not post one flat price, because the honest number depends on your trip. The size of your group spreads the vehicle and guide across more people; season, hotel standard and how far north you travel all move the total, as does keeping the car private. Tell us your priorities and we will quote it straight. Our cost breakdown explains what goes into the figure.

On entry, ECOWAS nationals generally have easier access, while others may need a visa or travel authorisation, and the rules shift, so check the current requirement for your passport before you fly — our visa and ETA guide is a starting point rather than the last word. A yellow fever certificate is normally required in the region. Ghana is stable and welcoming; our safety guide covers the basics worth knowing. Mobile money is used everywhere and cards work in the bigger hotels, but carry some cedis for smaller places and change money at a bank or a proper bureau rather than on the street.

Plan your Ghana trip from Freetown

The flight is short and the language is shared, so the only real planning is what to see and how to move between it. That part we handle — the driver, the hotels, the route — so your trip runs cleanly from touchdown to departure.

Questions people ask

How long is the flight from Freetown to Accra?

It is roughly one and a half to two hours where a nonstop is running, or longer if you connect one-stop through a regional hub. Remember that Freetown's airport is across the water from the city, so allow time for the ferry transfer. Schedules change, so confirm current flights before booking dates.

How do I book a tour with you?

Send your travel dates and group size, ideally on WhatsApp, and tell us what you want to see. We come back with a suggested route and an honest quote. Once you are happy, we confirm the details and arrange your driver-guide and vehicle. There is no obligation in requesting a quote.

What is included in a private tour?

A private tour usually covers an air-conditioned vehicle, a driver-guide, fuel and the daily logistics of moving between sites. Hotels, entrance fees and meals can be included or left to you, as you prefer. We set out exactly what your quote covers before you commit, so nothing comes as a surprise.

Can the trip be customised?

Yes. Almost everything we run for Freetown visitors is private and built to order. Tell us your interests, your pace and how many days you have, and we shape the route around that rather than slotting you into a fixed schedule. Add or drop sites as you wish.

Do I need a visa for Ghana?

It depends on your nationality. ECOWAS citizens generally enter more easily, while others may need a visa or travel authorisation. Rules change often, so always confirm the current requirement for your passport with an official source before travelling. Our visa guide is a helpful starting point.

Is Ghana safe and reliable for visitors?

Ghana is one of the more settled and welcoming countries in West Africa, and English is spoken everywhere, which keeps travel simple for visitors from Sierra Leone. We run these trips every week with our own drivers and vehicles. Take the usual sensible precautions, and see our Ghana safety guide for detail.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
