Ghana tours from Dallas

Dallas has one of the fastest-growing West African communities in the United States, and a lot of that traffic runs to Accra. Here is how the journey works and what we sort out once you land.

The short answer

  • There is no nonstop between Dallas and Accra, so you connect once through a US or European hub.
  • Plan on a long travel day; the connection you pick matters more than the airline.
  • Kotoka International Airport in Accra is your entry point, and we meet you there.
  • Most Texans on their first trip give it 7 to 14 days to make the flight worthwhile.
  • Cost is driven by group size, season, hotel standard and how much ground you cover — not a fixed package price.
  • We are a Kasoa-based team; send us your dates and numbers and we build the itinerary around them.

Why so many Dallas travellers head to Ghana

The DFW metroplex has become a real hub for the West African diaspora. Ghanaian churches around Irving and Arlington, community groups, students at UTA and SMU — there are a lot of people in North Texas with family, roots or business ties on this side of the Atlantic. For some it is a first visit to meet relatives; for others it is a return to Cape Coast and Elmina to stand where ancestors once stood.

We arrange trips for these travellers most weeks. What Dallas visitors tend to want is straightforward: land without the airport chaos, get around in something cool and reliable, and see the places that matter without wasting half the trip on logistics. That is exactly the part we take off your plate. If you are weighing up the emotional side of the trip too, our guide on Ghana for African Americans is worth a read before you go.

Getting from Dallas to Accra

There is no direct flight between Dallas and Accra, so every routing involves one connection. From DFW the sensible options are a domestic hub — Atlanta or New York (JFK or Newark) — and then across, or a single European stop through Amsterdam, London, Lisbon, Brussels or Istanbul. Delta, United, KLM, British Airways and a couple of others all feed Accra depending on the day. Fares and schedules shift constantly, so confirm current flights with the airline or your agent rather than trusting anything you read months out.

Realistically it is a long travel day: total door-to-door time usually lands somewhere between sixteen and twenty-two hours once you count the layover. Overnight legs into Accra are common, which means you often arrive in the evening. That is fine — we plan pickups around late arrivals all the time.

One tip that saves Dallas travellers grief: sort your entry paperwork before you fly. Most visitors now need to arrange things in advance rather than assuming a stamp on arrival, and the rules do change. Read our current explainer on the Ghana visa and ETA and always check the official position close to departure.

What we handle once you land

As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, the ground is where we earn our keep. Your driver-guide is waiting in the arrivals hall at Kotoka with your name on a board — no haggling with taxi touts at midnight after a twenty-hour journey. From there everything runs on a plan we have agreed with you in advance.

The vehicles are air-conditioned throughout: a saloon car for a couple, a Toyota Hiace minibus for a family or a group. The driver knows the roads, knows where the police checkpoints are, and knows which chop bar does the best waakye on the route. If you would rather just book the transfer and drivers separately, our getting around Ghana guide explains the options, and you can arrange a dedicated airport car on its own.

Landing late? We will be there. Tell us your flight and we will have a driver at Kotoka whatever the hour. Arrange an airport pickup or send your details on WhatsApp.

What a trip from Dallas usually looks like

Given the flight, we rarely recommend less than a week. Seven days lets you do Accra properly, drive out to Cape Coast and Elmina for the castles and Kakum's canopy walk, and still have a day to breathe. Two weeks opens up Kumasi and the Ashanti heartland, Mole for the elephants, or the beaches out west around Busua and Nzulezo. Our 7-day Ghana itinerary is a good starting frame, and the Cape Coast and Elmina castles guide covers the part most heritage travellers come for.

Nothing here is fixed. We have taken Dallas families who wanted days in a village near Kumasi with relatives and only light touring around it, and couples who wanted the full loop at pace. You tell us the shape; we handle the driving, stops, timings and hotels. For when to come, the best time to visit guide breaks down the seasons.

What it costs and how we quote

We will not put a fake number on this page. A private, guided trip costs more than winging it with tro-tros and shared taxis, and it should — you are paying for a vehicle, fuel, a professional driver-guide and someone answering the phone when plans change. What moves the price is real: how many of you there are, whether you travel in the December peak or a quieter month, the standard of hotel, and how many kilometres we cover.

The honest way to get a figure is to tell us the details. Send your dates, group size and a rough idea of what you want to see, and we come back with a clear, itemised quote — no pressure, no drip-fed extras. If you are budgeting the wider trip, our Ghana trip cost breakdown shows where money actually goes.

Questions people ask

How do I book a tour from Dallas?

Send us your travel dates, group size and a rough idea of what you want to see, either through the enquiry form or on WhatsApp. We reply with a suggested itinerary and a clear quote. Nothing is locked in until you are happy with the plan.

What is included in a private tour?

A tailored itinerary, an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver-guide, fuel, and our coordination throughout. Hotels, entrance fees and meals can be included or left to you — we spell out exactly what is in your quote so there are no surprises.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Completely. Most of our Dallas travellers change something, whether that is adding days with family near Kumasi, slowing the pace, or focusing on the coastal heritage sites. You tell us the shape and we build the driving and stops around it.

Do you handle groups or just couples?

Both. A saloon car suits a couple; a Toyota Hiace minibus handles a family or a larger group comfortably. Group size is one of the main things we ask, because it affects the vehicle and the price.

Is a deposit needed to confirm?

We usually take a deposit to secure vehicles and hotel bookings for your dates, with the balance settled closer to or during the trip. We confirm the exact terms in writing when we send your quote — we never spring hidden charges on you.

Is it safe and reliable travelling this way?

Ghana is one of the more settled countries in the region for visitors, and travelling with a known driver-guide adds a layer of reassurance, especially after a long flight. For current, practical detail read our Ghana safety guide, and always check your own government's travel advice before you go.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
