Why Nairobi travellers come to Ghana

Nairobi to Accra is a proper East-meets-West African trip, and it is easier than most people assume. Kenyans who have done the East African safari circuit come to Ghana for something different: coastal history, Akan culture and a music and food scene that owes nothing to the savannah. Jollof, waakye and banku with tilapia will feel new even to seasoned continental travellers, and the Ghanaian love of highlife and afrobeats gives Accra a nightlife that runs well past midnight.

There is a growing back-and-forth between the two cities through pan-African business, the creative industries and a diaspora that increasingly moves both ways. Kenyans working in fintech, media and the NGO sector pass through Accra regularly, and many discover the country is far more relaxed to travel than its reputation abroad suggests. If you are flying in for a conference or a family visit, a few extra days on the coast turn a work trip into a real holiday.

As a Kasoa-based team who run these trips every week, we take the ground logistics off your plate so you can spend your time seeing Ghana rather than negotiating with drivers at the roadside.

Flights from Nairobi to Accra

This is a well-established route. Kenya Airways and other carriers connect the two cities, either nonstop or with a single stop, and flying time is roughly five to six hours depending on the routing. A one-stop service usually costs less and passes through a hub such as Addis Ababa, Lagos or a Gulf airport.

We will not list flight numbers, days or fares here, because they change too often to trust on a web page. Confirm what is operating with the airlines or your agent, then send us your arrival details so we can be at Kotoka when you land. Before you book, read up on Ghana's visa and ETA and pick your dates with the best time to visit in mind.

What to see on a first trip

The standard first-timer route hugs the coast. West of Accra sit Cape Coast and Elmina, whose castles are among the most significant sites of the transatlantic slave trade anywhere. It is heavy, honest history, and worth the drive. Close by, the Kakum canopy walkway lets you look out over rainforest from a series of rope bridges, best tackled early.

Accra itself repays a day or two: Jamestown and its lighthouse, the Nkrumah Mausoleum, the sprawl of Makola market and a restaurant scene good enough to plan an evening around. With longer, add Kumasi for the Manhyia Palace and Ashanti culture, or push north to Mole for elephants on a walking safari. Our 7-day itinerary and Kakum guide help you sketch it out, and things to do in Accra covers the capital in detail.

How the trip runs on the ground

We run private tours only. You get an air-conditioned car or a Hiace minibus for bigger groups, a driver-guide who actually knows the roads, and a plan shaped around your dates rather than a fixed group departure. Being based in Kasoa, on the main Accra-Cape Coast road, means the coastal sites are close and we know the traffic patterns and market-day bottlenecks that catch visitors out.

Going private costs more than stitching together shared tro-tros and taxis, and we will say so plainly. In return you save hours and a good deal of stress, especially on a shorter trip where wasted time genuinely hurts. Our drivers also fill the gaps a map cannot: where to stop for good grilled tilapia, when to leave Accra to beat the Kasoa traffic, which castle tour guide is worth waiting for. If you would rather do parts independently, our transport guide lays out the options fairly.

What it costs, honestly

You will not find a headline price here, and that is deliberate. A fair quote depends on your trip: how many of you are travelling, the season, the hotels you want and how far you range. A coastal loop for a couple and a week-long tour reaching the north sit at very different budgets.

Fuel, park fees, accommodation and the driver-guide's time all feed in, and Ghana's high and low seasons move hotel rates noticeably. For context before you enquire, see our trip cost breakdown. When you send dates and group size, we reply with a clear, itemised quote, not a vague range.

Let's plan it. Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp for a tailored quote, arrange a Kotoka pickup, or look through our tours.

We keep it straight: tell us what you want and we will tell you honestly what is realistic in the time you have.

Questions people ask

How do I book a tour from Nairobi?

Message us your dates and group size on WhatsApp or through the tours page. We send back a tailored itinerary and an itemised quote, then confirm your details and airport pickup once you are happy.

What does a private tour include?

Usually an air-conditioned vehicle, a driver-guide, fuel and park entry for the planned stops, and a Kotoka pickup. Hotels and meals can be included or arranged by you; we spell it out in the quote.

Can you customise the itinerary?

Yes. Every tour is private and built around what you want to see, from a short coastal trip to a full loop through Kumasi and the north.

Do you cater to solo travellers and small groups?

We do. One or two people fit a car; families and groups usually take a minibus. Group size is one of the biggest factors in your quote.

Is a deposit required?

We normally confirm with a deposit and take the balance closer to your trip. The exact terms are set out in your quote before you commit.

Is Ghana safe and the service reliable?

Ghana is one of the steadier countries in the region for visitors, and we run these routes weekly with our own drivers and vehicles. Read our safety guide and check current official advice before travelling.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
