Ghana tours from San Francisco

San Francisco to Accra is one of the longer hauls to West Africa, which is exactly why it pays to go for longer and let someone else run the ground. Here is how we do it.

The short answer

  • There is no nonstop from the Bay Area, so you connect once through Europe or a US East Coast hub.
  • It is a genuinely long journey, which is why we push Bay Area travellers towards longer trips.
  • You arrive at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, where your driver-guide is waiting.
  • Ten to fourteen days lets a long-haul trip actually breathe.
  • Cost turns on group size, season, hotel standard and distance — we quote rather than sell a fixed rate.
  • Send your dates and numbers and our Kasoa team builds the itinerary around them.

The Bay Area's link to Ghana

The Bay Area's African community is smaller than the one in Texas or the Twin Cities, but it is well connected and it travels. Ghanaian professionals in tech, students across Berkeley and Stanford, Oakland's long Pan-African tradition and a diaspora that keeps close ties home — Ghana turns up regularly on the itinerary, whether for heritage, family or a first look at the continent. There is also a steady stream of Bay Area travellers with no family ties at all who simply want West Africa done well.

We arrange these trips most weeks, and the request from San Francisco is consistent: after a journey this long, make the ground part seamless. If part of your reason for going is history and belonging, our guide on Ghana for African Americans is a good place to start thinking.

Getting from San Francisco to Accra

There is no nonstop from SFO to Accra, and given the distance every routing carries a meaningful connection. The two sensible shapes are a single European stop — London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Istanbul or Lisbon — or a US East Coast hub such as New York, and across from there. A handful of carriers feed Accra on any given day. Fares and schedules move constantly, so confirm current flights directly with the airline rather than assuming last season's timetable still holds.

Be realistic about the clock. From the West Coast, door to door commonly runs somewhere past twenty hours once you count the layover, and you often reach Accra in the evening. That is precisely why we plan pickups around late arrivals as standard. Sort your entry paperwork well ahead too — the rules have changed — by reading our current note on the Ghana visa and ETA and checking the official position before you fly.

The part we take off your hands

As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, the ground is where a long-haul journey is either salvaged or spoiled. Your driver-guide is in the Kotoka arrivals hall with a name board, and the trip runs on a plan we settled with you in advance — no arguing over a fare at midnight when all you want is a bed.

The vehicles are air-conditioned across the board: a saloon car for two, a Toyota Hiace minibus for a family or group. Your driver knows the coastal road, the climb up to Kumasi, and where to stop for waakye or kelewele along the way. Prefer to handle transport on its own terms? Our getting around Ghana guide covers the options, and a dedicated airport car is simple to book by itself.

Why longer trips make sense from the West Coast

When the flight alone eats two days of your life, a four-day trip makes no sense. From San Francisco we usually suggest ten days to a fortnight so the effort pays off. That length lets you settle into Accra, drive the coast to Cape Coast and Elmina for the castles and Kakum, head up to Kumasi and the Ashanti kingdom, and still fit Mole's elephants or the western beaches around Busua. Our 14-day Ghana itinerary shows how that unfolds, and the Kumasi and Ashanti guide covers the cultural heartland.

None of it is rigid. We have run Bay Area travellers who wanted a slow, beach-heavy fortnight and others who packed in every region at pace. You set the priorities; we handle the driving, the hotels and the timings. To pick your window, the best time to visit guide walks through the seasons.

What it costs, and how we quote

You will not find an invented price here. A private, guided trip costs more than fending for yourself with shared transport, and that difference buys a vehicle, fuel, a professional driver-guide and someone on the end of the phone when plans shift. The real cost drivers are your group size, whether you travel in the December peak or a quieter month, the standard of hotel, and how far we range across the country.

The honest route to a number is simply to tell us. Send your dates, group size and a rough idea of the trip, and we come back with an itemised quote and no hidden extras. If you are budgeting the whole thing, our Ghana trip cost breakdown shows where the money goes.

Questions people ask

How do I book a tour from San Francisco?

Send your dates, group size and a rough idea of what you want to see, through the form or on WhatsApp. We reply with a suggested itinerary and a clear quote, and nothing is committed until you are happy with the plan.

What is included in a private tour?

A tailored itinerary, an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver-guide, fuel, and our day-to-day coordination. Hotels, entrance fees and meals can be included or arranged by you; the quote sets out exactly what is covered.

Can the trip be customised for a long-haul visit?

Yes, and we encourage it given the distance. Bay Area travellers often want a longer, slower plan with room to rest, or a close focus on one region. We shape the driving, stops and pace around your priorities.

Do you handle groups as well as couples?

Both. A saloon car suits a couple; a Toyota Hiace minibus carries a family or group comfortably. Group size is one of the first things we ask, since it determines the vehicle and affects the cost.

Is a deposit needed to confirm?

Usually a deposit secures vehicles and hotels for your dates, with the balance settled nearer the trip or on arrival. We confirm the terms in writing with your quote and never add charges you have not agreed to.

Is it safe and reliable to travel this way?

Ghana is one of the steadier countries in the region for visitors, and a known driver-guide is a real comfort after a journey this long. See our Ghana safety guide for practical detail, and check your own government's current travel advice before you go.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
