Two very different sunshine holidays

Cape Verde and Ghana both promise warmth, sand and an African setting, but they deliver very different holidays. Cape Verde is a volcanic archipelago floating off the West African coast, developed over the years into a dependable beach destination with a strong package-holiday industry, particularly on Sal and Boa Vista. Its appeal is simple: sun you can count on and a resort a short walk from the sea.

Ghana is a large, diverse mainland country. Yes, it has beaches, but it also has rainforest, savannah wildlife, cities full of life, and some of the most significant historical sites on the continent. English is the official language, which makes it remarkably easy to get around and connect with people.

If your dream is to lie on a lounger for a week, Cape Verde makes that effortless. If you want to come home with stories, Ghana is the more rewarding choice. Our overview of why visit Ghana sets the scene.

Beaches: convenience versus character

On pure beach quality and ease, Cape Verde is genuinely strong. The islands offer wide, white-sand beaches, warm turquoise water, and excellent conditions for windsurfing, kitesurfing and diving. Everything is set up for a hassle-free stay, and the year-round climate is a real draw.

Ghana's beaches are a different proposition — less manicured, more natural. The coves around Busua and the Western Region are palm-backed and peaceful, and Ghana has a small, friendly surf scene that Cape Verde's wind-driven waters do not quite match for beginners.

The honest verdict: Cape Verde is easier and more consistent for a dedicated beach week, while Ghana's coast is quieter and more atmospheric, and only one part of a much bigger picture. See our Ghana beaches guide for the highlights.

Culture and history

This is where the gap widens most. Cape Verde has a charming Creole culture, wonderful morna and coladeira music, and a relaxed island identity shaped by Portuguese and African influences. It is lovely, but relatively small in scale.

Ghana offers cultural depth of a different order. The slave-trade castles of Cape Coast and Elmina are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and among Africa's most moving places to visit. Beyond them lie the living traditions of the Ashanti kingdom, vibrant festivals, kente weaving and a music and dance culture that spills into everyday life.

Things to do beyond the beach

Cape Verde's activities revolve mostly around the water and the islands themselves: watersports, boat trips, turtle-watching in season, and hiking on the greener islands such as Santo Antao. It is a pleasant, low-key mix, but the range is limited by geography.

Ghana's variety is its trump card. You can walk the rainforest canopy at Kakum, look for elephants at Mole National Park, explore the markets and music of Accra and Kumasi, or lose an afternoon watching drummers and dancers perform.

In a single trip you can combine beach, forest, savannah and city — something no island break can offer. If entertainment and energy matter to you, Ghana's cultural life delivers, and our best beaches in Africa guide shows where the coast fits in.

Cost, ease and who each suits

Cape Verde is the easier option for a switch-off holiday: short-ish flights from Europe, all-inclusive resorts and very little planning required. If you simply want guaranteed sun with everything arranged, it does the job cleanly.

Ghana asks for a little more forethought — longer distances and a proper itinerary — but pays you back with far more to see and do, and strong value once you are there. For a one-to-two-week holiday that combines several experiences, Ghana can feel like better value than a beach-only trip. Both offer excellent winter sun.

In short: Cape Verde suits sun-seekers who want ease; Ghana suits curious travellers who want depth. If you are weighing Ghana against other coastlines, our note on the best time to visit Ghana will help you plan.

The verdict and how to plan

Choose Cape Verde for a simple, reliable beach holiday where the hardest decision is which lounger to pick. It is relaxed, easy and sunny all year.

Choose Ghana when you want your holiday to be an adventure as well as a rest — beaches and surf, rainforest and elephants, castles and drumming, all wrapped in genuine Ghanaian warmth. For most travellers wanting a richer African trip, Ghana is the fuller, more memorable choice.

Questions people ask

Is Ghana or Cape Verde better for a beach holiday?

Cape Verde is easier and more consistent for a dedicated beach week, with wide sands and year-round sun. Ghana's beaches are quieter and more natural but form just one part of a much broader trip. Choose Cape Verde for pure relaxation and Ghana for variety.

Which is easier to visit, Ghana or Cape Verde?

Cape Verde is generally simpler for a package beach break, with resorts that require little planning. Ghana takes a little more organisation because of longer distances, but a good itinerary makes it very manageable. English being widely spoken in Ghana also helps enormously.

Does Ghana have better culture than Cape Verde?

Ghana offers considerably more cultural depth, from UNESCO slave-trade castles to living Ashanti traditions, festivals and music. Cape Verde has a lovely Creole island culture but on a smaller scale. For heritage and history, Ghana is the richer destination.

Is Cape Verde in Africa like Ghana?

Cape Verde is a group of Atlantic islands off the West African coast, while Ghana is on the mainland. They share a warm climate but differ greatly in size, culture and things to do. Ghana offers a fuller mainland African experience.

Which is better value, Ghana or Cape Verde?

Cape Verde can be cheaper for a straightforward all-inclusive week. Ghana may cost more overall but delivers far more variety, which can make it better value for a longer, more rounded holiday. Always confirm current prices when booking.

Can you combine beaches and safari in Ghana?

Yes. Ghana lets you pair coastal time with wildlife at Mole National Park and rainforest at Kakum, plus cultural sites, in a single trip. It is not a classic Big Five safari, but the combination is something an island destination cannot match.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
