Two very different escapes

Mauritius, out in the Indian Ocean, is one of the world's most polished beach destinations: turquoise lagoons ringed by protective coral reef, manicured resorts, championship golf and unhurried spa days. It does luxury relaxation superbly, and if that is precisely what you are after, it delivers without a hitch. This is a place engineered for comfort.

Ghana offers something quite different in spirit. This is West Africa at its most welcoming — golden Atlantic beaches, yes, but also drumming, markets, rainforest, wildlife and a history that stays with you long after the tan fades. It is less about switching off entirely and more about coming home genuinely full of stories. If you are torn between the two, our why visit Ghana piece and the wider best beaches in Africa guide are good places to begin.

Beaches and the water

Mauritius wins the calm-water contest hands down. Its reef-protected lagoons are warm, shallow and glorious for snorkelling, the sea is safe for children, and the resort beaches are kept impeccably. For pure swimming, colour and easy family bathing, it is very hard to beat.

Ghana's coast has a rawer, more untamed beauty. Busua's easy break is a firm favourite for learning to surf, while long, palm-fringed stretches elsewhere feel wonderfully undeveloped, with fishing boats drawn up on the sand and only the sound of the waves for company. You trade the glassy lagoon for space, character and a coastline that still feels alive.

Both are lovely; they simply offer different pleasures. Mauritius is a photogenic, safe swimming pool of a sea, ideal if effortless bathing tops your list, while Ghana's beaches are for walkers, surfers and anyone who prefers a shore that has not been smoothed into a resort. The trade is real but rewarding: a little less calm water, a great deal more freedom to roam and discover. See our Ghana beaches guide for the specifics of where to base yourself.

Culture, history and things to do

Mauritius has genuine cultural richness — a warm blend of Indian, African, Chinese and French heritage, colourful Hindu temples, lively markets and excellent, spice-laden food. Beyond that, though, the activity menu leans heavily towards resorts, catamaran cruises, botanical gardens and a handful of set-piece attractions you can see in a couple of days.

Ghana's range is far wider and more active. The UNESCO-listed slave-trade castles at Cape Coast and Elmina are profoundly moving; Mole National Park offers elephants on a genuine walking safari; the Volta Region has waterfalls and forest hikes; and Accra buzzes with nightlife, galleries and creativity.

Layer in festivals, kente weaving, canopy walkways and unforgettable street food, and Ghana becomes a destination you actively explore rather than simply lounge in. Our cultural holiday in Ghana guide and festivals calendar show just how much there is to fill a week or two.

Cost, access and value

Mauritius is unapologetically a premium destination, and prices reflect it — especially at the five-star resorts that define the island's reputation. Ghana, by contrast, offers excellent value across the board: comfortable lodges, memorable guided tours, wildlife and superb food without a luxury markup at every turn.

Getting there is straightforward too. Accra is reached by direct and one-stop flights from Europe and North America, and English as the official language smooths everyday travel, from ordering dinner to asking directions. Ghana also makes it easy to combine beach, castles and wildlife on one route — see our 7-day itinerary or, for a deeper trip that adds the north, the 14-day itinerary. Prices, flight routes and visa rules change over time, so always confirm current details as you plan.

Arrive relaxed. Skip the post-flight scramble with a private airport pickup waiting the moment you land in Accra.

Which trip is right for you?

Choose Mauritius for a luxurious, low-effort island week — lagoon swims, spa afternoons and a resort that anticipates your every need. It is ideal for a pure honeymoon or a total switch-off holiday, provided your budget comfortably stretches to it.

Choose Ghana if you want a real adventure with beach time built in: history that matters, wildlife on foot, culture, brilliant food and warm people, all at genuine value. It suits curious travellers, active couples and families who want more than a poolside, and it flexes easily between comfort and adventure. Couples can compare notes with our Africa for couples guide before deciding.

Mauritius pampers you; Ghana changes how you see a place. For most travellers seeking meaning as well as sunshine, that makes Ghana the richer, longer-remembered choice — the kind of holiday whose stories you are still sharing at dinner parties a year later. Both are worthwhile; only one leaves you with a new perspective as well as a rested body.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
