e-Visa or regular visa: which route fits you

India offers most Ghanaian travellers a straightforward online route. The e-Visa covers common purposes such as tourism, business and medical treatment, and is applied for entirely online before you fly. For longer stays, employment, study or other special purposes, you will usually need a regular sticker visa arranged through the Indian mission. Choosing the correct category from the start is the single most important decision — an application in the wrong category is a common reason for delay or refusal.

Requirements differ by category and change from time to time, so treat any list you read online as a guide rather than gospel. Before you pay anything, confirm the current categories, validity and conditions on the official Indian visa portal. If you are unsure whether your trip is tourism or business, or how long you truly need, that is exactly the kind of question we help you settle before you apply. Read our visa requirements explainer for the general principles that apply to almost every country. Getting the category right also affects how long you may stay and whether you can enter more than once, so it is well worth a few minutes of care.

How the online application works

The e-Visa is completed on the official portal. You create an application, enter your personal and passport details exactly as they appear in your document, choose your category and travel dates, and upload the required files. Accuracy matters enormously here: a mismatch between your form and your passport, or a typo in your name or number, can hold up the whole process. Save your application reference so you can return to it if the session times out.

Once submitted and approved, an electronic authorisation is issued that you carry with you and present on arrival. Keep a printed copy as well as the version on your phone. If you are also arranging your journey, our guide to flights from Accra helps you line up dates that match your visa validity rather than the other way round.

Let us complete it with you. Online forms are unforgiving of small errors. We check every field against your passport and submit with you — start your visa support today.

Documents and photo you will need

While exact lists vary, most applicants should prepare a passport valid well beyond the trip with blank pages, a recent colour photograph that meets the portal's specification, and a clear scan of your passport bio page. Depending on your purpose you may also be asked for proof of your trip — a return or onward ticket, accommodation details, and evidence you can fund your stay.

Photos are a frequent stumbling block: the background, size and expression rules are strict, and a rejected photo means a rejected upload. Our photo and document guide explains how to get this right first time. If your passport is nearly full or close to expiry, sort that before applying — see our Ghana passport guide. We never invent requirements; we help you confirm the current ones and prepare each item properly.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Most problems are avoidable. Applying too late is the classic one — give yourself comfortable time before departure rather than relying on the fastest possible turnaround. Others include booking non-refundable flights before the visa is confirmed, entering details that do not match the passport, uploading a non-compliant photo, and choosing a category that does not match the real purpose of the trip.

Honesty and consistency are your friends. Your dates, your accommodation and your stated purpose should all tell the same simple story. If a previous application was refused anywhere, understand why before you try again — our guide to common refusal reasons is worth reading first. We can never guarantee approval, and you should be wary of anyone who does; what we can do is make sure your application is complete, accurate and well presented.

Questions people ask

Can I apply for an Indian visa online from Ghana?

For common purposes such as tourism, business and medical visits, most Ghanaian travellers use the online e-Visa. Longer or special-purpose stays may need a regular sticker visa. Confirm the current categories on the official Indian visa portal, and we can advise which fits your trip.

How much does an India visa cost from Ghana?

Fees vary by category and are set by the Indian authorities, and they change from time to time. We will not quote a figure that might be out of date — check the official portal for the current amount, and we will guide you through the payment step.

How long does it take?

Processing windows vary with category and demand. Apply comfortably ahead of your travel date rather than relying on the quickest turnaround, and confirm current timings on the official portal before you book non-refundable flights.

What photo do I need?

A recent colour photograph meeting the portal's size, background and expression rules. Non-compliant photos are a frequent cause of rejected uploads, so it is worth getting a proper one taken — our photo guide explains the details.

Do you guarantee approval?

No honest agent can guarantee a visa, because the decision rests with the authorities. What we guarantee is a complete, accurate and well-presented application, and honest advice at every step.

Can you book my flights and pickup too?

Yes. Once your timing is clear we book flights that match your visa validity, arrange accommodation, and set up your airport pickup for the return — all in one place.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
