Filling the US DS-160 form
The DS-160 is the online form every US visa applicant in Ghana must complete first — here is how to fill it accurately, section by section, without the slips that cause delays.
The short answer
- The DS-160 is the compulsory online application for almost every US non-immigrant visa, filed before you book an interview.
- You complete it in English at the official Consular Electronic Application Center, then print the confirmation page with the barcode.
- Your details must match your passport and supporting documents exactly — names, dates and passport number.
- A compliant digital photo is uploaded during the form; a poor photo is one of the commonest reasons for a restart.
- Save your application ID early so you can return to a part-finished form within the allowed window.
- Ghana Travel & Tour can review your DS-160 before you submit and prepare you for the interview at the Accra embassy.

What the DS-160 is and why it matters
The DS-160 is the online form that starts almost every United States non-immigrant visa application — whether you are travelling for tourism, business, study or to visit family. You complete it before you pay the visa fee or book your interview at the US Embassy in Accra. The consular officer reads your DS-160 answers on screen during your interview, so the form is effectively your first interview: it needs to be complete, consistent and true.
Because the questions cover your travel history, work, family and background, it takes most people at least an hour. Rushing leads to mistakes that are hard to fix later. Give yourself a quiet block of time, your passport, and any old passports to hand.

Rules and fees for US visas change, so always confirm the current process on the official US visa website rather than relying on hearsay. For background on the wider journey, our guide to the US visa from Ghana sets out the steps around the form itself.
What to prepare before you begin
Gather everything before you open the form. You will need your current Ghanaian passport, your travel dates or rough plan, your home and work addresses, and details of any previous US or international travel. Students need their school and programme details; business travellers need company information; visitors should know their host's address.
You will also need a compliant digital photograph ready to upload. It should be recent, in colour, taken against a plain light background with a neutral expression and no glasses. Many applications stall here, so it is worth getting the photo right first. Our guide to passport photo and document requirements explains the standards, and a proper visa documents checklist keeps everything in order.
- Passport (and any old passports)
- Travel plan and US host or hotel address
- Employment or school details
- Compliant digital photo
- Previous visa and travel history
Having this in front of you means you fill each screen once, correctly, rather than guessing and returning to edit.
Working through the form, section by section
Open the Consular Electronic Application Center, choose the US Embassy in Accra as your location, and note your application ID immediately — you need it to resume if you are interrupted. Answer in English using the letters of the alphabet, and enter your name exactly as it appears in your passport, not as you usually write it.
The form moves through personal information, address and phone, passport details, travel and travel companions, previous US travel, contact in the United States, family, work and education, and a set of security questions. Answer every field honestly. Where something does not apply, use the "Does Not Apply" option rather than leaving it blank. Upload your photo when prompted and check it passes the on-screen quality test.

Save often. The system times out, and losing progress is frustrating. When every section is complete, review the summary, sign electronically and submit. Print the confirmation page with the barcode — this is what you carry to the interview.
Common mistakes Ghanaian applicants make
The most frequent problems are avoidable. Names that do not match the passport, a passport number typed incorrectly, and dates entered in the wrong format all create inconsistencies an officer will notice. Answers that contradict your supporting documents — for example a job on the form that your bank statement does not reflect — raise questions about credibility.
Another common slip is treating the DS-160 as separate from the rest of your case. It is not. Your form, your supporting documents and your interview answers should tell one consistent story, so it helps to understand the wider visa requirements first. Weak, contradictory or padded information is a known contributor to refusals; see our honest look at visa refusal reasons.
Finally, do not pay someone to submit a dishonest form on your behalf. False statements can carry long-lasting consequences. Accuracy, not exaggeration, is what serves you.
After you submit: the interview and next steps
Once submitted, you pay the visa fee and book your interview appointment following the current official instructions. At the interview in Accra you bring your printed DS-160 confirmation page, your passport and your supporting documents. The officer may ask about anything you declared, so re-read your own answers beforehand.
Preparation matters as much as paperwork. Knowing how to speak clearly about your purpose, your ties to Ghana and your plans makes a real difference — our US visa interview tips for Accra cover exactly this. Approvals are never guaranteed, but a consistent, well-prepared application gives you the best possible footing.
If your visa is approved, your passport is returned with the visa, and you can move on to flights and plans. If it is refused, understanding the reason helps you decide whether and how to reapply.

Questions people ask
Is the DS-160 the same as the visa?
No. The DS-160 is the application form you complete online before your interview. Being able to submit it does not mean a visa has been granted — the decision is made by a consular officer, and approval is never guaranteed.
Can I save the form and finish later?
Yes. Note your application ID as soon as you start, and you can return to a part-completed form within the period the system allows. Save regularly, because the page can time out.
What if I make a mistake after submitting?
You cannot edit a submitted DS-160 directly, but you can complete a new one and bring the corrected confirmation to your interview. It is far better to check carefully before you submit.
How much does it cost?
US visa fees change over time and depend on the visa type. Always confirm the current amount on the official US visa website rather than relying on older figures.
Do I need my old passports?
Yes, if you have them. The form asks about previous travel and visas, and having your old passports to hand helps you answer accurately.
Can Ghana Travel & Tour submit it for me?
We guide and review your application and prepare you thoroughly, but the answers must be your own and truthful. We help you get them right rather than filing a form you have not seen.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
