Waterfalls of the Eastern Region
The forested hills of the Eastern Region hide some of Ghana's most accessible waterfalls, most within a day's reach of Accra. Here is where to chase them.
The short answer
- Boti Falls, near Koforidua, is the region's headline attraction, a twin fall best seen in the wetter months.
- Akaa Falls sits close to Boti and is often combined on the same trip.
- Tsenku Waterfall near Dodowa involves a rewarding forest hike.
- Falls run fuller in and just after the rainy season and can slow to a trickle in the dry.
- Steps and trails can be steep and slippery, so wear proper shoes.
- Most falls are best reached with a driver, as public transport stops short of the trailheads.

Ghana's waterfall country
Ghana's most famous single waterfall, Wli, lies over in the Volta Region, but for sheer choice and easy access the Eastern Region is hard to beat. Its forested hills around Koforidua, Dodowa and Begoro hide a cluster of falls that you can reach on day trips from Accra, threading through cocoa country and small ridge towns along the way.
As a team based in Kasoa who run these trips every week, we love the Eastern Region for a first taste of Ghana's greener, cooler interior. The scenery on the drive is half the reward. For an active itinerary, read this alongside our hiking in Ghana guide.
Here are the falls most worth chasing, with honest notes on seasons and effort.
Boti Falls
Boti Falls, near the village of Huhunya not far from Koforidua, is the region's headline sight. A long flight of steps leads down into a green gorge where two falls, traditionally called the male and female, tumble side by side into a pool. In the wetter months the two can merge into a single powerful curtain, which locals regard as a special event.
Nearby you can also walk to the Umbrella Rock, a remarkable balancing stone, and a cluster of three palm trees growing from a single root. Together they make a satisfying half-day of gentle exploring. Boti features in many Accra day trips and can anchor a longer 7-day itinerary.

The steps down and back are steep, so take your time and carry water.
Akaa Falls and Tsenku Waterfall
Close to Boti, Akaa Falls is a shorter, quieter cascade often combined on the same outing. It requires a bit of a scramble down through the trees to the base, but the reward is a peaceful spot away from the crowds that gather at Boti on weekends, where you can often have the pool and the sound of falling water almost to yourself. Because the two are so near each other, a driver can easily fold both into one relaxed morning.
Further south, near Dodowa, the Tsenku Waterfall rewards a proper forest hike. The trail crosses streams and climbs through greenery, sometimes needing you to wade or hop across rocks, before reaching a tall, slender fall that drops into a cool pool, so it suits travellers who want to earn their view. A local guide is well worth it for the route, the river crossings and pointing out birds, butterflies and the occasional troop of monkeys along the way.
Both are best in and just after the rains, when water levels are high.
Begoro, Asenema and seasonal caveats
The region has more to offer for keen waterfall hunters, including the Begoro Falls in the hills beyond Koforidua and the smaller Asenema Falls near Aburi, an easy add-on to a ridge day out that combines nicely with the botanical gardens. None of these are enormous, and some are little more than a pretty cascade after rain, but strung together with the drives through cocoa farms and hill towns between them, they make the Eastern Region a genuine and varied waterfall circuit rather than a single big set piece.
Be honest with yourself about the seasons. In the dry months, from roughly late autumn to early spring, several falls slow to a trickle. Our best time to visit guide explains the rhythm of the rains so you can time it right.
Getting there and staying safe
Most Eastern Region falls sit at the end of side roads and forest paths that public transport does not reach, so a private driver is by far the easiest approach and lets you link several in a day. Our transport guide covers the alternatives.
Wear grippy closed shoes, as steps and trails are often wet and slick. Take water, insect repellent and a dry bag for phones. Pack sensibly using our Ghana packing list, and never swim where locals advise against it, as currents and depths at the base of a fall are not always what they seem.
At the busier falls you will usually pay a modest entry and often a small fee for a local guide, both of which support the surrounding communities. These charges change over time, so treat any figures online as rough and confirm on arrival. Guides are worth taking in any case: they know the safe routes down, the best photo spots and the stories behind each site.
Plan your waterfall trip
The Eastern Region is one of the most rewarding day-trip zones in Ghana, and it comes alive when someone knows which falls are flowing and how to link them without backtracking. That is exactly what we do.

Questions people ask
Where is Boti Falls and how do I get there?
Boti Falls is near Huhunya, not far from Koforidua in the Eastern Region, within day-trip range of Accra. A long staircase leads down to the twin falls. Public transport stops short of the site, so most visitors go with a driver.
When do Ghana's Eastern Region waterfalls flow best?
During and just after the rainy season, when water levels are high. In the drier months several falls slow to a trickle, so check our best time to visit guide and time your trip around the rains for the fullest cascades.
Can you visit several waterfalls in one day?
Yes. Boti and Akaa Falls sit close together and are commonly combined, and a driver can add other stops like Umbrella Rock. Tsenku, near Dodowa, involves a longer hike and often works better as its own outing.
Is the hike to Tsenku Waterfall difficult?
It is a moderate forest hike that crosses streams and climbs through greenery, so a reasonable level of fitness and grippy shoes help. A local guide is well worth it for navigation and for spotting wildlife along the way.
Are the Eastern Region falls better than Wli?
Wli, in the Volta Region, is Ghana's tallest single waterfall and spectacular, but the Eastern Region offers more falls within easy reach of Accra. For a day trip, the Eastern circuit is often the more practical choice.
What should I wear to visit the waterfalls?
Closed, grippy shoes are essential, as steps and trails are frequently wet and slippery. Bring water, insect repellent and a dry bag for your phone, and dress in layers as the interior can be cooler than the coast.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
