Ghana north-to-south grand tour

One trip, the whole country — elephants at Mole, the Ashanti heartland at Kumasi, the castles on the coast. Here is how we make it flow.

The short answer

  • A grand tour links the far north's wildlife with the historic southern coast in one planned trip.
  • The spine runs Accra to Kumasi, up to Mole National Park, then back south to Cape Coast and Elmina.
  • Give it real time — ten to fourteen days lets the long drives breathe instead of exhausting you.
  • The dry season, roughly November to March, is the easiest window for the northern roads.
  • One private vehicle and driver-guide stay with you throughout, which removes the daily logistics.
  • Cost is driven by days, distance, hotel standard and group size, not a fixed package price.

What a grand tour of Ghana really means

Ghana packs a surprising amount into a country you can cross in a couple of long days. In the far north, elephants walk to the waterhole at Mole. In the middle sits Kumasi, the Ashanti capital, with its golden-stool history and one of West Africa's biggest markets. On the southern coast stand the slave-trade castles at Cape Coast and Elmina, and the Kakum canopy walk in the rainforest behind them. A grand tour ties all of it together in one journey instead of three separate trips.

This is the tour for people who want the complete picture, not a single region. As a Kasoa-based team who run the full route regularly, we plan it so the long drives are broken sensibly and the days on the ground are unhurried. If you are weighing up how much time to give Ghana, our guide on how many days in Ghana is a useful starting point.

The natural spine runs like this. From Accra we head to Kumasi — around 250 kilometres through Nsawam and Nkawkaw — for the Manhyia Palace, the Ashanti cultural centre and the sprawl of Kejetia, one of the largest markets in West Africa. From there it is a long push north to Mole National Park in the Savannah Region, breaking the drive at the Kintampo waterfalls and passing the ancient mud-and-stick mosque at Larabanga, for a dawn game drive or a walking safari among the elephants, antelope and warthogs.

Turning south, we come back down through Kumasi and out to the coast: Cape Coast and Elmina castles, the sobering dungeons and the Door of No Return, then the Kakum canopy walkway strung high through the forest, before finishing in Accra. Our Mole safari guide, Kumasi and Ashanti guide and Cape Coast and Elmina guide go deeper on each stop.

How long, and when to go

The single biggest mistake on this trip is trying to do it too fast. Accra to Mole is the best part of two days on the road, and the northern stretches reward patience rather than a heavy foot. Ten days is a sensible minimum; fourteen lets you slow down, add a rest day at the coast or beside the lake, and actually enjoy each place rather than seeing it through a windscreen. A tight schedule turns the best trip in Ghana into a blur of long drives, which is exactly what we plan against. Our 14-day itinerary shows how the pieces fit.

Timing matters too. The drier months, roughly November to March, make the long drives and the game viewing far easier; the harmattan haze arrives around December and January. The rainy season can leave some northern roads slow going. Our best time to visit Ghana guide breaks the seasons down, and we will give you an honest read for your exact dates.

How we run the logistics

What makes a grand tour bearable rather than gruelling is that you are not solving problems every morning. One private, air-conditioned vehicle and one driver-guide stay with you the whole way, so there is no rebooking, no bargaining at each town, and no working out routes at dawn. Some travellers fly one leg — Tamale to Accra, say — to trade a long drive for a short flight, and we can build that in.

We handle the hotels to your chosen standard, the park fees and timings, the early starts that make the game drives worthwhile, and the pace between stops so no single day becomes a marathon. Cost follows the real inputs — how many days, the distance covered, the standard of hotel and the size of your group — rather than a one-size figure, which is why we quote per trip. Tell us your budget and we will be straight about what it does and does not stretch to.

Start planning your Ghana grand tour

Seeing Ghana end to end is one of the best ways to understand the country — the shift from the dry north to the green coast, the history layered from Kumasi to Elmina. Done at the right pace, with the driving handled, it is a genuinely great trip rather than an endurance test.

Let us plan the whole route. Send your travel dates, group size and the standard of hotel you like, and we will reply with a tailored plan and an honest quote — by email or on WhatsApp. Get a tailored quote.

Questions people ask

How do I book a grand tour?

Send us your travel dates, group size and the standard of hotel you prefer. We build a route to suit, confirm the timings and park logistics, and send a clear quote. Once you are happy, we hold the vehicle, driver and bookings for your dates.

What is included?

A private vehicle with a driver-guide for the whole trip, planned routes and timings, and hotels to your chosen standard. Park entry fees, activities and meals are set out in the plan so you can see exactly what is and is not covered.

Can the route be customised?

Entirely. This is a private tour, so we adjust the stops, the pace and the balance — more time at Mole, an extra coast day, a flight in place of a long drive — to fit what you want rather than a fixed package.

What group sizes work for this?

From a couple up to a family or a small group of friends. We match the vehicle to the number, a car for a few or a minibus for more, so everyone travels comfortably on the longer legs.

Is a deposit needed?

Yes, for a multi-day tour we usually ask for a deposit to secure the vehicle, driver and hotel bookings, with the balance due before or during the trip. We set the amounts out clearly in the quote, with no hidden extras.

Is the trip safe and reliable, including the north?

Yes. We use maintained, insured vehicles and experienced drivers, keep long drives to daylight, and plan realistic timings for the northern roads. As a Kasoa-based operator running this route regularly, we know where the real limits are and plan around them.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
