The short answer

  • Most Ghanaians need a visa before travelling to the UK; the standard visitor visa is the most common.
  • You apply online on the official UK government site, pay the fee, then book a biometrics appointment at TLScontact in Accra.
  • You must show who you are, why you are travelling, and that you will return — not a fixed list of documents.
  • Fees and processing times change often, so always confirm the current figures on the official UK site before you pay.
  • Clear, honest, well-organised documents matter far more than a thick file of extras.
  • Ghana Travel & Tour reviews your documents and prepares your whole application — without ever guaranteeing approval.

Which UK visa do you need?

The first step is choosing the right route, because applying under the wrong one is a common reason applications fail. Most travellers from Ghana use the Standard Visitor visa, which covers tourism, visiting family or friends, short business trips and some medical visits. It normally allows stays of up to six months at a time.

If you are going to study, work or join a spouse, those are separate routes with their own rules — a student visa, a work visa or a family visa, for example. Each asks for different evidence, so it is worth being clear about your purpose from the start.

The online application and TLScontact

UK visa applications are made online through the official government service. You create an account, complete the form, pay the visa fee, and then book a biometrics appointment. In Ghana this is handled by TLScontact in Accra, where you attend in person to give your fingerprints and photograph and submit your supporting documents.

Fees, appointment availability and processing times change regularly and can differ by visa type and by any priority service you choose. For that reason we never quote a fixed price here — always check the current fee and timeline on the official UK site before you pay.

Make sure your passport is valid and in good condition before you start; if it is close to expiry, sort that first with help from our Ghana passport application guide. Once your appointment is booked, plan your travel to Accra with time to spare so you are not rushing on the day.

Documents to prepare

There is no single official checklist that fits everyone, because the evidence you need depends on why you are travelling and your personal circumstances. In general, applicants are asked to show three things: who you are, why you are going, and that you can afford the trip and will return.

Typically that means a valid passport, recent bank statements, proof of employment or business, and details of your accommodation and travel plans. If someone is inviting or sponsoring you, their letter and documents help too. Follow the current official guidance rather than any fixed list you find elsewhere, and check our notes on photo and document requirements.

Quality beats quantity. A clear, consistent, honestly presented file is far more persuasive than a thick folder of extras that raise questions.

Let us review your file. Send us your documents and we will tell you what is strong, what is missing and what to fix before you submit. Request a document review or message us on WhatsApp.

How to give yourself the best chance

UK caseworkers are assessing whether you are a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of your stay. You strengthen your case by showing strong ties to Ghana — a steady job or business, family, property or ongoing studies — and by making your plans clear and realistic.

Consistency is everything. Your bank statements, your stated purpose and your travel dates should all tell the same story. Vague or contradictory information is one of the most common causes of refusal, as we explain in our guide to visa refusal reasons in Ghana.

Think ahead about the rest of your trip too. Sensible travel insurance and confirmed onward flights show you have genuinely planned to travel and to come home. Never submit false documents — it can lead to a long ban.

Finally, give yourself time. Rushed applications are where avoidable errors creep in, from mismatched dates to missing statements. Start early, gather your evidence calmly, and if anything is unclear, ask before you submit rather than after a refusal.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
