How UK work visas work

The United Kingdom runs a points-based system, and for most people the route to working there is the Skilled Worker visa. The essential first step is a genuine job offer from an employer who holds a sponsor licence — without that, an application generally cannot proceed. Other routes exist, such as those for health and care roles or global talent, but the Skilled Worker path covers the widest range of jobs.

Because salary thresholds, eligible occupations and fees are revised regularly, never rely on figures from an old blog post or a friend's experience from a few years ago. The list of shortage or in-demand roles also changes, and some occupations carry different salary rules from others. Always check the current rules on the official GOV.UK pages before you make plans, and treat what follows as a map of the process rather than a fixed list of numbers.

English, funds and other requirements

Beyond the job offer, most applicants must prove they can speak, read and write English to the required level, usually through an approved test or a recognised qualification. You may also need to show maintenance funds — money to support yourself when you first arrive — unless your sponsor certifies they will cover this. The exact amount and how long you must hold it can change, so confirm the current rule.

Depending on your circumstances, you might also need a tuberculosis test certificate from an approved clinic and a valid Ghanaian passport with enough validity remaining. A criminal record certificate is required for certain roles, particularly those involving vulnerable people, and it can take time to obtain, so start early. If your qualification was earned abroad, you may also need it assessed against the UK standard.

Applying and attending biometrics

You apply online, pay the visa fee and, in most cases, the immigration health surcharge, then book a biometrics appointment at the visa application centre in Accra. There you provide fingerprints and a photograph, and submit or upload supporting documents. Accuracy on the forms matters — details that do not match your paperwork slow things down or lead to refusal.

Processing times vary with demand and the priority service you choose, and you should keep an eye on your email and account for any request for further documents. Understanding why applications are refused helps you avoid the avoidable mistakes, and when your visa is granted our flights guide helps you find sensible fares so you can arrive ready to start your new role.

Questions people ask

Do I need a job offer before applying?

For the Skilled Worker route, yes — you need an offer from a licensed sponsor and a certificate of sponsorship before you can apply.

How do I know an employer is a real sponsor?

The UK publishes a public register of licensed sponsors. Check that the company appears there and that the offer matches the advertised role and salary.

What salary do I need?

Thresholds depend on the occupation and are revised regularly. Confirm the current figure for your role on the official GOV.UK site.

Is an English test always required?

Most applicants must prove English at the required level, but some qualifications count instead. Check which evidence applies to you.

Can my family come with me?

Dependants can often join on the Skilled Worker route, subject to conditions and extra fees. Verify the current rules before planning.

Can Ghana Travel & Tour book my flight?

Yes. Once your visa is approved we can arrange your flights and help with onward travel.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
