What a Schengen visa is

The Schengen area is a group of European countries that share a common short-stay visa. With one Schengen visa you can travel across most of them for tourism, family visits or business, typically for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It is one of the most useful visas to hold, which is exactly why the application is scrutinised.

Because a single visa covers many countries, you do not apply to “Schengen” in the abstract — you apply through one specific member state, and choosing correctly is the first thing to get right. For a wider comparison, see our guide to UK, US and Schengen visas from Ghana.

Everything else — documents, insurance, itinerary — flows from that first decision.

Which country should you apply through?

The rule is straightforward in principle. You apply through the country that is your main destination — where you will spend the most time. If your time is split evenly between several countries, you apply through your first point of entry into the Schengen area.

Applying through the wrong country is a genuine and avoidable reason for refusal, so plan your itinerary before you choose. Our dedicated guide on which embassy to apply through from Ghana walks through the common scenarios, and our visa requirements explained guide gives helpful background.

Once you have settled on the country, confirm whether it uses VFS Global or another partner in Accra, since procedures differ slightly by embassy.

The VFS process and documents

In Ghana, most Schengen applications are handled through VFS Global in Accra on behalf of the embassy. You complete the application form, book an appointment, and attend to submit documents and give biometrics. Fees and exact requirements vary by country and change over time, so always confirm the current details with the relevant embassy or VFS before you go.

There is no single universal checklist, but applicants generally need a valid passport, a completed form, photos, proof of funds, employment or business evidence, accommodation and flight reservations, and compliant travel insurance. Check our notes on photo and document requirements, and renew your passport first if needed using our passport application guide.

Reservations should be genuine and consistent with your stated plans; do not book non-refundable travel until your visa is granted.

Insurance, itinerary and common pitfalls

Two things trip up many applicants. The first is travel insurance: Schengen rules require cover that meets a set minimum for medical costs and repatriation across the whole trip. Ordinary cover may not qualify, so make sure yours is compliant — our guide to travel insurance for visa applications explains what is needed, with general travel insurance background too.

The second is the itinerary. Your dates, bookings, insurance and stated purpose must all match. Inconsistent or vague plans are a leading cause of refusal, as we cover in visa refusal reasons in Ghana.

As with any visa, show genuine ties to Ghana and never submit false documents. A coherent, honest application is far more persuasive than an inflated one.

One more common slip is timing. Embassies advise applying within a set window before travel — not too early, not too late — and appointment slots at VFS can fill up in busy seasons. Book your appointment as soon as your plans are firm, and leave room in case a document needs to be corrected and resubmitted.

Let Ghana Travel & Tour handle it

The Schengen visa is powerful but detailed, and small errors — the wrong country, non-compliant insurance, a mismatched itinerary — cause avoidable refusals. No one can guarantee a result, but the right preparation gives you the strongest, most honest application possible.

Our team helps you pick the correct country to apply through, builds and reviews your document file, arranges compliant travel insurance, and prepares your VFS appointment. We make sure your bookings, dates and stated purpose line up so nothing invites an easy refusal, and we flag anything that needs correcting before you attend. We can also book your flights, arrange your European-facing plans and sort your onward travel, keeping everything consistent.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
